Corporations

We always need donations of computer equipment to support our projects.

Email us at: contact.reneal@gmail.com

How you can help:

We are seeking corporate donations of used computer equipment with the following minimum requirements.

Laptops must meet the following minimum specifications:

  1. Processor speed  at least 800MHz (Pentium M or above)
  2. Memory at least 512 MB
  3. Display, keyboard, and Ethernet network connection must be working
  4. No hard disk is required but may be useful in higher performance machines.
  5. No operating system required. If disk remains installed, it will be securely erased.
  6. Must have AC adapter power cord that can run on 220 volts, although the battery does not need to be functional

Desktops must meet the following minimum specifications:

  1. Processor speed  at least 1GHz (Pentium 4 or above)
  2. Memory at least 512 MB
  3. Ethernet network connection and video must be working
  4. No hard disk is required but may be useful in higher performance machines.
  5. No operating system required. If disk remains installed, it will be securely erased.
  6. Power supply can operate on 220 volts.

Laptops or desktops purchased from roughly 2004 or later should meet these specifications.  They will be used as "thin clients" in the low-cost system.  If a hard disk is present, it will be securely wiped. Previously erased or wiped hard drives with no Windows license are completely usable.

Flat panel monitors must meet the following minimum specifications:

  1. Must be functional with reasonable color and brightness
  2. No flickering or other obvious signs of impending failure

USB optical mice: wired only

USB keyboards: no dead keys

Sorry, equipment that does not meet these minimum requirements cannot be accepted. Donations will be placed in schools for use by students and teachers, so please consider what would be sufficient quality for several years of operation.

Pickup area is generally limited to the San Francisco-San Jose area, although pickup from other locations can be arranged for larger quantities.  Contact us if you have questions regarding a possible donation.

Our Process for Incoming Donations

We take donors' information security seriously.  We inspect donated computers to see if they meet our minimum specifications.  Next we connect them to the network and perform a series of server-based tests to wipe the hard disk and confirm performance and reliability as client computers.  Computers that do not pass inspection or testing are disposed of at a certified e-waste facility, ensuring minimal impact to the environment.

How we protect your security
1. We remove stickers, labels, or other identification
2. We completely erase the hard disk using an NSA-approved four-pass overwrite process prior to any disk access by Reneal IEO (this will be done even if the disk will be recycled as e-waste)
3. We reset the BIOS for network boot;  if this cannot be done, we place a small network boot program on the disk or, if no disk, insert a network boot CD in the CD drive

The computer is now ready for packing and shipping to begin its new life in a school computer lab in a developing country!
