Back to school in the Philippines [2013-06-13]

School Year 2013-2014 started yesterday in the Philippines, and as a consequence it’s been an unusually busy week here at Reneal IEO with activity in each of our five mission areas.

Low-Cost Computer Infrastructure: I sent out notification yesterday to six schools in Cebu that Reneal IEO hopes to partner with them in early 2014.  See the project plan here.  Three of the schools need significant amounts of computer hardware, so Reneal IEO is actively soliciting donations of used equipment from individuals and corporations.  See the request for hardware here.  This is an ambitious plan, but we envision enormous benefits of scale in this exciting expansion of Reneal IEO’s work in the Philippines.

Student Information System (SIS) database: Teachers at Compostela National High School are entering information about the incoming first-year students and transfer students into Neal’s SIS database.  Returning students are being assigned to their new sections.  This database aids teachers in preparing forms and analyzing the student population.  Because students’ information is retained in the database from year to year, there is significant savings in time and effort to manage the data.

Teacher Training in IT: One key aspect of the 2014 Philippines project is providing teacher trainings at the selected schools on the new system computer system.  This is also an important part of the 2013 Tanzania projects, so I’ve been preparing a training matrix and reviewing past training materials for needed updates.  The operating system upgrade to Xubuntu 12.04 means that some minor aspects of the user interface have changed, so there will be some tweaks to the previous version of the training files.

Conduit for Educational Material: Two big boxes of educational materials provided by several generous donors (fabric, patterns, books, computer supplies, etc.) went out last Friday.  Hands-on materials in particular are so valuable in making students more employable, particularly if they are not able to go to college.

High School Scholarship Program:  The UCSAP scholarship committee will be evaluating scholarship candidates this week.  Ten first-year students will be selected based upon grade point average and financial need.

We couldn’t do this work without the support of our generous donors.  The funds and materials entrusted to Reneal IEO give new opportunities to students and teachers at schools in developing countries.  See our How to help page for ways to get involved in this effort!
