Three more days [2018-03-14]

We’re down to our last three days in Cebu.  It’s not over yet, but thankfully all of the planned work is now behind us.  We are so grateful for our computer technicians Lloyd Tuñacao and Rhog Sampan who make our work lighter.  They, like Neal, work with such intensity and focus.  Their mentor Sir Jade Reyes taught them well!  In the last week we’ve been to Tabok NHS and Labogon NHS in Mandaue City to do updates and repairs, and we were back at Compostela Science and Technology High School yesterday to finish the installation and training.  We’ll be back at CTU-Carmen tomorrow where Neal will add some additional capabilities requested by the professors there.

One of the primary activities on this trip to Cebu has been upgrading servers from Ubuntu 12.04 to Ubuntu 16.04.  Neal completed EIGHT of those updates on this trip!  For the seven servers in Cebu that already had Ubuntu 16.04 as their OS, he made significant software and content updates.  Along with the three new servers that we installed on this trip, we now have 18 servers here in Cebu with the more capable and user-friendly Ubuntu 16.04 plus the latest software.  Three servers in Tanzania were the first to receive this new configuration back in September of 2017, and we’re already planning ahead to complete these same updates later this year for the remaining seven servers in Arusha that are still running Ubuntu 12.04.

Although it has added to the existing workload, Neal has really enjoyed the software development opportunities afforded by CTU-Carmen.  Learning more about what university students need has been very useful.  His research this week has been focused on creating an additional “sandbox” SQL instance for students to use for learning and development.  He did something similar with Apache already.  The trip to CTU-Carmen tomorrow will be for installation of these new features.  Neal will be working on that today while I return to Compostela SciTech for a bit more orientation for the very energetic computer teachers there.  We are also working in a couple of school evaluation visits on this visit to Cebu.

One other exciting event this week was meeting the UCSAP scholars last Sunday.  The UCSAP Committee organized a get-together, complete with snacks from Jollibee!  We enjoyed talking with the students and seeing what a close-knit group they are.  We are excited about adding some additional new scholars for the next school year.  We are so grateful to the UCSAP Committee for faithfully administering this program for nine years already.

This Friday?  It’s packing up, adding the remaining equipment to the spares stock at Arcelo Memorial, cleaning the apartment, and saying sad goodbyes.
