Thank you CNHS! [2013-04-20]

Our work at Compostela National High School (CNHS) started back in 2006 when we were assigned as U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers to the island of Cebu in the Philippines.  Even after we completed our Peace Corps service in 2008, we have continued our close association with the school and teachers.  On this trip, Neal has been working long hours to upgrade the system at CNHS to Xubuntu 12.04.  Xubuntu 12.04 will be the basis for future installations, so this work was an important stepping-stone for Reneal IEO.

Xubuntu 12.04 will be a huge win for schools in terms of capability, speed, and ease of use.  It’s almost miraculous to compare this to the days and weeks that we spent in 2008 coaxing Pentium 1 and Pentium 2 computers to run under Ubuntu 8.04.  Those of you in my age bracket will remember how there was no standard way to open up a computer case back then; my knuckles were scraped up from swapping memory from one ancient computer to another as we struggled to make them usable.  It took every bit of Neal’s software magic to solve the video problems we had with each different machine.

Having said that, it’s time once again to salute and thank the principal, PTA, IT staff, and teachers at CNHS for their patience and support for our projects.  They have been, and continue to be, willing to serve as a pilot for our work.  They have embraced it with enthusiasm despite the occasional glitches and inconveniences.  Through lost files and balky printers and inexplicable thin client hang-ups as the system has evolved, the teachers at CNHS have kept smiling and maintained faith in the system.  Their dedication to the mission of education in spite of limited resources and difficult conditions is a continuing inspiration to us.  Here’s hoping that the recent computer donations from Marriott and other Reneal IEO contributors will continue to serve the students and teachers at CNHS for a long, long time.  Through their role as a pilot school, CNHS has enabled Reneal IEO to develop over the past few years a turn-key low cost computer infrastructure that is ready for implementation in other schools in the Philippines and Tanzania.

The support from CNHS isn’t just moral either.  In the best spirit of Filipino hospitality, we have been watched over and cared for on a 24/7 basis.  Being from the Midwest, I know that food is proportional to love and that too is true in the Philippines.  We only hope that Reneal IEO can embody selfless service in the same fashion as new projects come into being.  Contact us at contact.reneal@gmail.com to be a part of this effort.
