Phase 3 preparations [2021-11-11]

Work toward the Phase 3 projects with Reneal’s generous donor Apto Solutions has continued since the last blog post.  We picked up a big batch of equipment last week and have completed testing.  As before, the computers are perfect for Reneal’s mission!  Neal finished building the new servers and is close to the end of a major software update.  Reneal Team Tanzania completed visits to the existing schools to make repairs and check out the servers.  We still have installations of two new labs remaining from Phase 2, but these schools are close to being ready.

For Phase 3, Apto Solutions provided laptops and other items to completely equip computer labs in seven new schools in Tanzania.  We are so grateful to the entire Apto Solutions Team for their amazing support!  Reneal Board members Sharon Fingold and Priscilla Batty joined me for checking out the donated items and getting them boxed up for shipping.  Reneal Country Director David Nyangaka has been working with local government officials to evaluate candidates in several districts in Arusha Region as well as some schools near Dodoma.  Selections will be finalized soon.

Neal is in the midst of a major software upgrade for the Reneal servers.  This includes updates to the educational content, user applications, and operating system.  But the main focus of his work is significantly improving the capability of his custom diagnostic and repair program called “systemCheck”.  systemCheck runs continuously in the background and is constantly looking for off-normal conditions in the hardware and software of the Reneal server – and in some cases, automatically fixing problems that it finds.  After this update, systemCheck will be able to identify and fix a much broader range of potential server issues.  There will also be a more user-friendly alert system if problems arise.

This newly updated software will be deployed at the seven new Phase 3 schools, and Reneal Team Tanzania will also deploy it in stages to all currently fielded servers in Tanzania.  It will be very helpful to have these new capabilities as well as having uniform software across the entire set of servers in Tanzania.  We look forward to working with our Team there to make this important change.
