Paying tribute [2014-07-04]

One year ago yesterday, the world lost a truly remarkable person: Dr. Betty Halliwell, co-founder of Books for Peace (see here for a previous blog post about Betty’s work at BFP).  Neal and I traveled this weekend to Van Nuys, California to attend Betty’s memorial service.  We are happy to report that BFP operations continue, carried on by Betty’s husband Mike.  In fact, just last week he just sent out 600 pounds of high-quality books to a school in the Philippines.

Our intern Jade prepared a tribute to Betty, a tarpaulin featuring Betty’s picture along with numerous photos of teachers from Compostela National High School holding books sent by BFP.  It was truly a perfect showcase of Betty’s legacy, jam-packed with the happy smiles of the teachers as they held up highly prized books.  Multiply this by the hundreds of schools that BFP has served to date, and suddenly it dawns on you that hundreds of thousands of lives have been touched by Betty and BFP.

As a fellow non-profit serving students and teachers in developing countries, we honor (and aspire to) the impact that BFP has had and will continue to have.  We thank our supporters and donors for the key role that they play in making it possible for Reneal IEO to touch lives and give new opportunities through education.
