Partners in the mission [2014-07-16]

Neal and I have been truly fortunate to connect with Kids on Computers (www.kidsoncomputers.org), like Reneal IEO a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to bringing computers and e-learning resources to students and teachers in schools in developing countries.  A few months ago KoC pointed us to the fantastic RACHEL educational resources (http://www.worldpossible.org/rachel/) that we’ve now loaded on the Reneal IEO server.  Last Sunday evening we had a chance to meet with the KoC founders and some of their board members and volunteers to share stories and information, from top-level strategy to down-in-the-weeds software nuggets.

KoC, like Reneal IEO, bases their system upon free, legal Open Source software and the Linux operating system.  Our organizations share a vision of the computer as more than just a vehicle to learn Microsoft Office du jour, but as a learning tool that spans all subject areas.  The educational resources available as Open Source software touch nearly the entire curriculum: math, science, English, computer technology, social studies, music and art, and so forth.  In addition, the passion and belief that education and technology can change lives shone through during the dialog.  And of course, discussion of the challenges and big picture questions brought knowing nods and smiles from everyone around the table.

We look forward to continuing and deepening our connection with KoC.  Their main focus is Mexico but they also have labs in India, Nepal, and Argentina.  Reneal IEO currently serves the Philippines and Tanzania. We have much to learn from them, and certainly there is more than enough work to go around!  It is truly astounding though to realize what can be done when people of like mind can come together to effect change.
