One day at a time [2015-02-01]

It is with joy and relief that I can report that the installation and training have been completed at Labogon National High School!  There are still a few bugs for us to fix, but through the efforts of Team Philippines and the IT teacher at LNHS, the system is in place and ready for use.

The week unfolded pretty much as we had hoped.  Monday Raul and Jade picked up the servers at two of the schools to bring back here to the apartment so Neal can prepare them here at home.  Then Tuesday Jade headed back to Labogon NHS to pick up where we left off before Neal’s medical issue.  Accompanying Jade were four students from the class he teaches at Cebu Technological University.  This “on-the-job-training” (OJT) is an important part of a students’ education, and Reneal IEO was the beneficiary of their time and talent.  Tuesday and Wednesday morning, Jade and the four OJT students worked their way through the full suite of system tests.  There are some odd issues with the VLC video player application – some computers using some user accounts have audio but not video when showing a movie.  However all other tests passed, and thanks to the IT teacher, the lists of teachers and students were entered to create accounts (for teachers) and folders (for students).

The final activity was teacher training.  Jade graciously volunteered to take on this challenge, so he and I spent Thursday morning going through the training material and checking out the laptop and projector.  Labogon NHS had representatives from each department attend the training on Friday morning, and it sounded like a fantastic experience!  There is still work to do, but we are excited to see how the system is used at LNHS!

In the meantime, Neal pulled one of the servers out of the box and was dismayed to find that it is not working.  Evidence suggests that the box experienced a pretty hefty shock somewhere along the way between California and Cebu.  So… we have our work cut out for us to troubleshoot and fix (or replace) the hardware.  That’s his big task tomorrow.  It’s a solvable problem, but just another unexpected wrinkle in our work.

Team Philippines sets their sights tomorrow on the next school, Jagobiao National High School (also in Mandaue City).  Our friends visiting from America, Sharon and Antonio, will join Raul, Jade, and the OJT students in starting the installation there.  The first day is always particularly exciting, so we are thrilled to have Sharon and Antonio (current and former Reneal IEO board members) join us to watch the transition from “Before” to “After” in the IT lab!
