News from abroad [2016-05-13]

It’s been another week of progress in testing, packing, and shipping computer equipment to Cebu for our September projects.  Katherine was back Monday, and the garage is looking spacious again with only one final row of monitors to tackle.  We also have a stack of desktops and laptops that have their disks wiped and are ready to go.  We are expecting at this point to deploy them for the as-yet-undetermined 2017 projects.  While I hate to let hardware sit unused until we return to Cebu early next year, it’s clear that we already have a full plate for the September 2016 trip with five new installations, the 2nd Annual Cebu Open Source Software Championship, and system administration training.

The other – so far fruitless – quest this week has been looking for a reasonably priced LED projector.  Katherine pointed us to craigslist, and there were two good options but we ended up striking out on both.  It’s clear that you get what you pay for, and a projector that will work reliably in a hot Filipino classroom with sufficient output to show up when you can’t cover the windows is going to be pricy.

Anyway, the big news of the week was the national election in the Philippines.  It’s been hotly contested, so we were interested to see what would happen.  There was 80% turnout among eligible voters!  That is even more amazing when one considers the discomfort of voting there, standing in long lines under the hot sun.  How I wish Americans cherished their right to vote as much...  For sure, the Filipino people have spoken and we hope fervently that the new leaders honor their promises to serve all citizens.

David Nyangaka, Reneal School Liaison in Tanzania, continues to make the rounds of the schools in the Arusha area.  We are very thankful for his support and hard work!  We were also delighted to see via Facebook that our partners from Arusha Node Marie visited Oldadai Secondary School to see the Reneal IEO computer system.
