It’s Tuesday so it must be Mandaue [2014-05-31]

Some weeks Neal and I barely stir from the routine of shuttling between our apartment and our home school at Compostela National High School, quietly flailing away at the computer demons and pausing only to eat and sleep.  However this week was considerably more diversified for me, and it took careful calendar tracking to be in the right place at the right time.

The week started well on Monday with the annual gathering of the NiNJA group, so called because of the first letters of the names of team members Neal, Nerry, Jade, and Aca but now including Jillian as well.  The NiNJJAs and their families gathered at a local beach resort and spent a wonderful day swimming, eating, and talking.  After a long weekend of work, Neal was also happy to enjoy some long-awaited snorkeling.

Tuesday our team evaluated two high schools in Mandaue City for possible 2015 projects.  Rogie, our valued colleague from Aboitiz, was able to join us as well.  In fact one school we visited was his alma mater.  The computers that he used as a student are still functioning in the lab; that perhaps gives a sense of the vintage of the hardware that we often encounter here.  It is a real tribute to the IT teachers in Cebu that they are able to keep this hardware running and usable for IT instruction for students!  The Reneal IEO client-server approach can give new life to such hardware.  The data that we have gathered over our various evaluation visits will now be reviewed by the Reneal IEO Board of Directors to down-select schools for 2015.  After the excitement of the school visits, Neal and I then had the more mundane task of renewing our visas at the Bureau of Immigration.

Wednesday I worked with Ma’am Nerry and Jade to facilitate several IT-related sessions for the teachers’ semi-annual in-service training at Compostela National High School.  It was wonderful to join with dear friends again to explore the new capabilities of the system!  It was especially exciting to share with them the RACHEL educational materials (http://worldpossible.org/rachel/) that are now available on the main server.

Thursday Jade and I made a return visit to Daanbantayan National High School.  What a joy to be back and see our colleagues and friends there again!  We taught two sessions of the teacher orientation training for the Reneal IEO system, and we were also able to deliver some additional used computer equipment donated by Aboitiz.  The teachers were curious and interested, so it was a very fun day.  It was a long haul though, with a 3-hour bus ride each way for Jade and me.

Friday morning Neal, Jade, and I were on the road again, this time to Carmen National High School to make some final updates to the server.  We will return to Carmen on Tuesday, when Neal plans to install software to run our Linux-based system on the NComputing units there.  I left Carmen after lunch and joined with the school heads of Compostela to visit the Dep Ed Cebu Province Division office in Cebu City.  I was able to present a summary report of the Reneal IEO 2014 work to Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Arden Monisit.  We are so appreciative of the support of Dr. Monisit and his staff for our work in Cebu!

As the Reneal IEO Board of Directors begins the task of planning for 2015 projects, one major consideration will be that of resource availability.  Donations of used computers (laptops or desktops with monitors) are essential to make this work possible.  We especially welcome corporate donations of used computer equipment where there are multiple units of the same model type; this greatly speeds up our software development and installation efforts.  Cash donations are also vital.  Total Reneal IEO costs to outfit an IT lab are roughly 1000 US dollars for the server computer, network switches, Uninterruptible Power Supply, Ethernet cable, mice/keyboards, and other miscellaneous parts.  Please see our “How to Help” page for more information on giving.
