Homeward bound [2014-06-07]

I’m not sure how it snuck up on us, but after 4-1/2 months in Compostela we are heading back to America.  The long-planned 2014 Philippines projects have been finished (or at least as much as any computer projects are ever “finished”).  We will spend the next few weeks wrapping up loose ends, capturing lessons learned, and preparing a summary of the data that we captured during school evaluation visits.  It is a bittersweet feeling: the joy of fulfilling Reneal IEO objectives, the anticipation of seeing home and family and friends, great hope for the use of the systems we have just installed, but all mixed with the sadness of leaving loved ones in the Philippines.

True to form, the last week was tumultuous.  A fairly major bug presented itself at Compostela National High School (CNHS) early in the week, serious enough for Neal to consider postponing his return if we couldn’t fix it.  Wednesday midday we rolled back the Network File System (NFS) from version 4 to version 3, and it seemed to help significantly.  Thursday was consumed by testing and anxious watching of the system.  Thankfully all seems to be well again.  It is somewhat frustrating to observe that this was not caught in our earlier testing, but the CNHS system is quite complex with multiple servers.  It’s not easy to think of all possible combinations of things that could happen and test for them.  At any rate, we do have some new lessons learned on system testing that we will try to incorporate into future test plans.

I spent much of the week developing spreadsheet templates for grades and forms for the teachers.  I gave a short seminar at Bagalnga Integrated School on Tuesday morning and then met with some of the CNHS teachers on Wednesday afternoon.  Anything that frees up the teachers to teach is a win, so I will continue that effort in America.

Certainly one of the major highlights of this trip was being a part of an incredible team pulling together to serve the students and teachers of the Philippines.  We extend our deepest thanks to Ma’am Nerry Bugtai, IT teacher at CNHS, Sir Jade Reyes, Reneal IEO Intern, Raul Lorenzana, all-around layout and construction expert, Jillian Dudang, former Computer Student Specialist, Mark Robertson, my brother, and Rogie Abala, Aboitiz.  We couldn’t have done it without you all!  And of course, the IT teachers at each of the schools are incredibly skilled and knowledgeable.  We are excited about the new partnerships forged in 2014 and seeing how they unfold in future years.
