Happy return to Free Geek [2016-04-01]

This week we made a quick trip up to Portland, Oregon to pick up a generous hardware grant from Free Geek (www.freegeek.org).  Blog readers may remember our last trip, and this trip was equally inspiring and productive!  We came back with 10 desktops, 15 keyboards, 30 mice, and as many monitors as we could cram into our rental truck – over 80!  We are so thrilled that we will be able to give these monitors new life in public high schools in the Philippines where we are constantly battling attrition of the CRTs they received back in the early 2000’s.  In addition flat panel monitors consume so much less power and take up a lot less space, so it is a big advantage for the schools to replace the CRTs.

As before, we spent a long time packing the rental truck as cart after cart of equipment was wheeled out.  Interestingly no one in America wants 17” monitors anymore, but for Reneal it was a bonanza as Free Geek tried to clear its shelves.  We are hoping we can make another trip back up there as soon as we are eligible for another hardware grant!  The long drive home went smoothly, and now the monitors are lined up in our garage awaiting testing, packing, and shipping.  This generous Free Geek donation assures that we have the hardware we need for our upcoming 2016 projects as well as to help schools replace dead units.  I have put out the call for schools who have hardware needs, and we’ll be getting boxes underway soon!
