Finished! [2016-05-22]

As of yesterday, every last one of the 80 monitors donated by Free Geek is in a box now, either ready for shipment to Cebu or on its way already.  What a thrill it is to know that we will be equipping schools with new computer labs as well as addressing CRT attrition in existing labs!  We send a huge THANK YOU to Free Geek for this game-changing donation and to Katherine Yen (pictured here) and Marcus Lee for their help in getting everything packed for shipment.  And in addition to the boxes flowing out of Reneal IEO headquarters, World Computer Exchange just made their first foray into balikbayan box shipping, sending five boxes to Cebu stuffed with desktops, keyboards, and mice purchased by Reneal in support of the 2016 projects.

We are very thankful to organizations like Free Geek and World Computer Exchange who provide us with a pipeline of used computer hardware.  While Reneal IEO welcomes direct hardware donations, Free Geek and WCE have more visibility to attract donations of used computer equipment from both individuals and corporations.  These two organizations then do some basic testing and refurbishing so Reneal can get a quality product for use in the schools.  Reneal is just one of many non-profits these organizations work with, and we feel very fortunate to be among their customers.

Classes start in mid-June in the Philippines, and we’re anxiously awaiting news about the roll-out of the new Senior High.  This will be the first year for Grade 11, so there is a lot going on to prepare classrooms, teachers, and curriculum for this first batch of students.  This school year Reneal will be expanding its high school scholarship program to 14 scholars, from ten previously.  These scholarships help the recipients pay for uniforms, school supplies, and the PTA fee, but most important is the weekly 100 peso allowance (about $2) which helps defray the cost of getting to school and back each day.  The per-student annual total is about $130 – less than the price of one pair of Air Jordans.  It doesn’t take many dollars to make a huge impact!

Speaking of dollars, monetary donations to Reneal are always welcomed to support the scholarship program, in addition to computer lab installation.  Normal Reneal costs for a computer lab range from $1100 to $1500 per school, including the server computer, network switch, uninterruptible power supply (UPS), network cable, and shipping costs; if client computers must be purchased, the cost increases by about $30 per seat.  Reneal is proud to provide these systems, packed with free and legal educational resources, free of charge to schools in need!
