Dwindling days [2018-03-05]

Now that the calendar has turned over to March, it seems to us that the clock is speeding up.  Thankfully it was a productive week of work, including our fourth time to provide Reneal System Administration training here in Cebu.  It was a small but energetic group, and we were so pleased to have them bring up their questions and concerns.  We were also very grateful that our entire Reneal Team Philippines had a chance to present – Sir Neal, Sir Jade, Lloyd, and Rhog did a great job!

When I last blogged, we were getting ready to head to Compostela Central.  It is one of the few elementary schools where we’ve installed a Reneal system, and they’ve been very active users.  It is always a special pleasure to visit Central because the two teachers in the computer lab, Sir Zernan and Ma’am Ed, are married.  Like Neal and me, they seem to enjoy being colleagues as well as a couple!  We were able to fix a few issues, but the combined efforts of Lloyd, Rhog, and myself were not enough to figure out why a couple of desktops wouldn’t boot.  We were disappointed, but we definitely gave it our best shot.  Our “weird issue of the day” was that the bonded network interface that Neal defines for the server was slow in initializing, so he had to add a delay during the boot process.  We actually discovered this in the course of demonstrating Neal’s “Video Streamer” program that allows a teacher to share a video with all of the clients simultaneously.  Neal was happy that the problem was revealed and that he was able to fix it.

Tuesday night, Sir Jade came to our apartment and the three of us figured out who would present what during Thursday’s system administration training.  We identified some edits to make on our presentation material, and all of us felt good about the status by the end of our meeting.  I had been working with Sir Jezreel Buot at CTU-Carmen to arrange for the venue and the all-important snacks and lunch.  We are so grateful for his help in making it a successful day!

Wednesday Lloyd dropped by the apartment, and he went through his part of the presentation with us.  I spent the rest of the day making the final edits on the slides, preparing the certificate templates, and gathering up the gear needed for the training.  We were excited to be able to give three keyboards to Sir Herbert, the teacher at Tominjao NHS in Daanbantayan who was coming to the training; it’s never easy to get things to the north, and this was a timely opportunity.

The training itself went very well on Thursday.  It was really a great group of new Super Users from Carmen NHS, CTU-Carmen, Tominjao NHS, Jugan NHS, and Compostela Science and Technology HS.  Sir Jade, Lloyd, Rhog, and Neal also did a great job.  Unfortunately I got confused on the training schedule and made Neal rush a bit on one of his presentations, but otherwise it was smooth, the participants were engaged, and the food was great!  We were very happy to have a new batch of Super Users with their training now behind them!

Friday we started installation at Compostela Science and Technology High School.  Neal just stayed at the apartment to work on the server, since there was a lot of moving and cleaning to do before we could really get started with the technical stuff.  Lloyd and Rhog and the two teachers at SciTech did a massive amount of work, and if we hadn’t run out of Cat5 cable, they probably would have finished the wiring!  It was really a fantastic start, a day of hard work that was incredibly productive.  We’re looking forward to getting finished up week after next when we deliver the server.
