Crunch time [2014-05-23]

School Year 2014-2015 is near at hand here in the Philippines, with the campus a swirl of activity again with students enrolling and parents helping with the annual Brigada Eskwela clean-up and repair.  The principal, guidance officers, and teachers here at Compostela National High School are spending long days preparing for the first day of classes on June 2nd.  And for Neal and me, the tension is mounting as the time dwindles before we head back to America.

This week we made follow-up visits to five schools to install a few last updates on each of their Reneal IEO servers.  It was a very challenging and tiring effort for Neal, since each school’s system has its own unique attributes that must be accounted for in his software development.  His main focus right now continues to be adapting the Reneal IEO Open Source software to run on the NComputing M-series-based systems that are installed in some of the high schools.  Many days seem to be “one step forward, two steps back”, but it’s looking good that he’ll have something to install before we leave.

There are always special moments that stand out in our school visits, and one of them this week was having our intern Jade train a brand new batch of Computer Student Specialists (CSS’s) at Tayud National High School.  Jade was in Neal’s first CSS group at our home school, Compostela National High School, back in 2007.  Watching him pass the torch to a new generation of CSS’s was very special to us.  We hope those six students at Tayud NHS can follow in Jade’s footsteps to become hard-working young professionals who serve their country and help lead technological development for the benefit of others.

We are also now bidding farewell to friends both new and old as our departure time nears.  We have met so many talented and committed teachers and school heads this year.  They are the ones that really help make the Reneal IEO mission a success, providing new educational opportunities to students through the use of technology!
