Cebu! [2016-09-17]

Time is flying – it’s already been almost two weeks since we left California!  Communication has been on the back burner, due both to our busy schedule and to the incredibly slow internet at our apartment.  We’re both taking a breather today though to get caught up.  We have already visited six schools, finished our first lab installation, expanded another lab, replaced many old CRT monitors with flat panel monitors, purchased a big pile of computer equipment, and prepared the five new servers for installation.  We couldn’t have done it without the help of Reneal Team Philippines!

Sir Jade, our intern for many years and now one of the IT teachers at Arcelo Memorial National High School, spear-headed the prep work at the new installation sites.   He has been joined by two college students, Rhog Sampan and Lloyd Tunacao, who are serving Arcelo for their on-the-job training this academic year.  Rhog and Lloyd have been working side-by-side with Neal and me as we’ve been making the rounds at the schools, and they have been a huge help as we execute the latest Reneal projects in Cebu.

The first new installation was at Carmen Senior High School.  Carmen already has a Reneal lab but with the advent of the senior high in the Philippines, we are adding a second lab at selected schools to support the addition of grades 11 and 12.  It was great to be back at Carmen working with Sir Jezreel!  We were able to see some of his students using the Pencil 2-D animation program for their class projects.  Nice work!  The new Carmen installation also offers a beta test opportunity for the new 16.04 operating system that Neal has been working on for the last several months.  Sir Jezreel really likes some of the new features, including the open source Epoptes program that allows the IT teacher to view and manage all of the students’ computer displays.

We have also visited three of the schools where we installed the Reneal system earlier this year: Consolacion National High School Day, Tabok National High School, and Tipolo National High School.  We were able to replace all of the old CRT monitors at Consolacion and Tabok with flat panel monitors from Free Geek (www.freegeek.org).  How exciting to see the boxes that Katherine and I packed back home in Fremont a few months ago being unpacked and set up here in Cebu!

This coming week we’ll be installing a senior high lab at Labogon National High School, a 2015 recipient of a Reneal system.  We always enjoy working with Ma’am Ganjet at Labogon, and we’re so pleased that we’ll have the hard-working duo of Rhog and Lloyd with us to make the work go faster!  This lab will have 20 laptops donated by Polycom to serve as the clients – our first full Polycom lab!  We are so grateful to Polycom for the on-going support!
