Box wrangling [2016-08-12]

Exciting news!  Forty of the laptops donated by Polycom in July are on their way to the Philippines!  Katherine and I packed four boxes last Monday.  We tried to do it in a modular fashion, with two boxes required per school.  Each pair of boxes contains 20 laptops, 20 laptop adapters, a network switch, and a monitor, keyboard, and mouse for the server.  We just need to add the server itself, 20 mice (one for each laptop), a UPS, and some Ethernet cables and – voila! – a computer lab!  It’s nice to have hardware for two 2017 schools already in the pipeline!

We have sent the hardware to Compostela National High School until we decided upon the exact location for deployment.  The principal and teachers at Compostela have been exceedingly patient with us, as we transfer our warehouse-like existence from here to there.

Jade is going with the OJT students Rhog and Lloyd to Carmen National High School tomorrow to get the new Carmen Senior High computer lab set up.  They’ll be working with long-time Reneal partner Sir Jezreel Buot, the IT teacher at Carmen.  When Neal and I arrive in September, we’ll put in the server and a few other odds and ends to make it a complete lab.  Next weekend is Tominjao National High School, one of the brand new Reneal schools.

Discussions are continuing with The School Fund for a joint Tanzania project in 2017.  We hope to meet again with Judy and Denis Severson before we leave for the Philippines, to further our plans for a computer lab.  Judy has sent some information and questions to Mr. Amos, their “man on the scene” there, to see what is already in place.
