Back to work [2016-04-22]

We’ve had a nearly unprecedented three weeks away from our laptops, but now we’re home again and it’s time to get back to work.  Coincident with our homecoming, the new long-term support version of Ubuntu was formally released yesterday.  Neal has been eagerly awaiting 16.04, so it was great timing!  He’ll have his work cut out for him for the summer.  And today our shipping service, Manila Box, picked up six boxes bound for Cebu.  Still lots of packing and shipping to do yet, but it’s nice to have so much already underway.

David, our school liaison in Tanzania, has been busy visiting the ten Reneal schools in Arusha to assist them in finding ways to use the computers more effectively.  He has provided the schools a copy of the National Exam in computer technology, and the hope is that some of the schools will have students sit for this exam at the end of the school year in November.  Although the exam is pretty theoretical, it will definitely help to motivate some hands-on use and learning.  David also helped fix a problem at one of the schools this week, reviewing with them how to use Neal’s systemCheck program to diagnose and solve issues that arise.  Between David in Tanzania and Jade in the Philippines, we are really blessed to have experts on the scene supporting the schools!

My other pending task is working with the FET scheduling program to support Compostela National High School as they grapple with adding 11th grade to an already-crowded class schedule.  I am excited to support with the teachers on this – FET really simplifies the complicated problem of putting this all together!
