Back in Londido District [2021-01-14]

2020 was a big year for Reneal, with expansion into a new district in Arusha Region.  We are very excited to be working now with five schools in Longido District!  We ended 2020 with some unfinished business, so Reneal Team Tanzania has been back on the road to Longido to carry on with the installations.  We are so pleased to welcome Anold Christopher to the Reneal Team.  Anold joined Reneal Technicians Robert Nyangaka and Erick Mneney during the installation work in 2020, and he will be supporting the Longido schools longer term with maintenance and training.

Longido Secondary School already had an old computer lab for the ordinary level (O-level) students – this corresponds roughly to grades 7-10 in the US.  By adding a Reneal server, these old desktop computers could now be run even if the disks and/or software had failed.  The guys have made two trips so far in January, installing the server and preparing the desktops to be thin clients.  Between hardware issues and peripheral shortages, there’s definitely work to be done yet.  I miss being alongside Robert, Erick, and Anold as they battle various hardware issues – knowing them, they will prevail!

Reneal and its partners installed a full-up lab for the advanced level (A-level) students in October of 2020 (A-level is similar to grades 11-12 in the US).  This lab is running well, and the school did some renovations over the holiday break: new carpet to keep down the dust and solid wooden chairs.  It’s looking great!

On the Reneal scholarship front, Reneal’s Tanzania Country Director David Nyangaka has been helping the six O-level scholars prepare for the start of the school year for their final year in O-level, and the three A-level scholars are heading back for their second term.  In the Philippines, the scholarship committee has put together the plan for the nine Reneal scholars’ second semester.  Schools in the Philippines are not holding in-person classes, so it’s challenging for students, parents, and teachers alike.  Reneal is very grateful to the Philippines scholarship committee for their persistence and resilience in keeping the scholarship program going in the midst of so much uncertainty.
