Back at headquarters [2015-07-26]

Wow, back home in California again.  The jet lag has faded but the excitement about this year’s work in Cebu continues to bring smiles to our faces.  We met with the Reneal IEO Board of Directors yesterday to debrief them on the trip and to discuss 2016 Cebu projects.  Neal and I also gave an update on preparations for the Tanzania trip.  It’s coming together well, although the difficult job of packing the gear is still ahead.  We’ll be taking four servers, five network switches, and over 50 laptops to equip four new secondary school IT labs.  In addition, we’ll be purchasing UPSs, mice, network cable, and other items once we arrive in Arusha.  It’s a big chunk of work but there’s a great team there in Arusha to help us make it all happen.

The other big news this week is that our intern Jade will be traveling to northern Cebu Monday to install the Reneal IEO system at our seventh school in Cebu in 2015: Medellin Science and Technology High School.  We didn’t expect to be able to do another school, but it was a wonderful case where some unexpected extra resources became available and a school with a compelling need was recommended to us at almost exactly the same time.  We are excited to see the photos and hear the stories from Jade’s trip.  We know he will be well cared for there in Medellin by our friends and partners in northern Cebu!

Neal has been doing a lot of on-line shopping for 2016 Reneal equipment already.  One of his favorite jobs is selecting the parts and then hand-building the server computers for each school where we install the system.  Server reliability is an absolutely pivotal issue in a client-server system, and Neal goes to great pains to minimize risks.  Our current resource challenge is finding additional client computers for the candidate schools.  Some of them were heavily damaged by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 and still have not been able to replace the computers they lost.  Reneal IEO has just become a partner of the National Cristina Foundation, a non-profit that helps match computer donors to organizations that need computer hardware.  We are excited to be a part of NCF, and prospective donors can check us out here to find out what is needed for 2016.
