2015 underway [2015-01-16]

It was a very active first week.  We visited most of the 2014 schools, shopped for needed equipment, and began our first installation of 2015.  As always, it was great to reconnect with our family and friends here in Cebu!

We were able to visit six of the seven 2014 schools in the first week.  Neal made updates to each of the servers, adding some new applications plus an updated version of his “systemCheck” program that helps diagnose and fix server issues.  We checked out the hardware.  There had been some attrition with the laptops, although we were able to find workarounds for many of the issues.  So far we have had to replace one unit that appears beyond repair.

We (with Jade’s help) have also purchased much of the needed equipment.  As usual, we have decimated the stock of optical mice in the Cebu City area!  The equipment is all organized now and ready to be deployed.  We still need a few things (I forgot to pack keyboards for the server computers!), but we are well along in the procurement process.

We also began our first 2015 installation, at Labogon National High School in Mandaue City.  It went exceedingly well.  Neal got the server and UPS up and running quickly.  Team Philippines members Raul and Jillian were able to put in all of the network cable in one day.  The IT teacher and I worked together to change the BIOS of the thirteen computers they already had in their computer lab (Pentium IV-class machines), replace depleted CMOS batteries, and add memory to get all of the machines up to 512Mb.  Raul and Jillian also unpacked and set up the eight desktops and monitors that are being provided by Reneal IEO through the generosity of our Ft. Collins donor.  What a thrill to see those computers and monitors that traveled from Ft. Collins to California and then on to Cebu all fire up perfectly!  The nearly 1000 students at Labogon National High School will now have 21 computers to use!  By the end of the day, every screen had the welcoming penguin logo.  There is still testing and some finishing touches on the wiring, but it was a great day’s work.

I must also mention the state of the computer lab when we arrived.  It was immaculate, and to have ten year-old computers still functioning for student use is a testament to the skill and commitment of the IT teacher.  We are extremely impressed and have great hopes for what she will do with this new system!
